The Georgetown PBPM program is designed for "career change" students and offers the following for qualified applicants:
• Rigorous training in math and laboratory sciences
• Co-matriculation with undergraduate pre-medical students for all lectures and some labs
• The opportunity to be evaluated and receive a recommendation letter from the Pre-Med Recommendation Committee (after completion of 30 credits at Georgetown University).
• Volunteer and seminar opportunities and information in the health field
• One-on-one advising and other academic support
• Eligibility to register with the Georgetown University Pre-Medical Society
• Workshops and seminars on how to apply to and interview for medical school
• Commercial MCAT preparation courses offered on campus and in the metropolitan area (cost not covered by tuition)
• Financial aid advice and eligibility for federal Stafford loan and selected private loans
WHO SHOULD APPLY
The Georgetown Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program is designed for qualified students who have finished their undergraduate degrees, but lack all or most of the core pre-med science courses (Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, or Physics). The program is not appropriate for those who have completed the basic pre-med courses and wish to enroll in advanced coursework. Students in this category should consider the Special Masters Program offered by the Department of Physiology and Biophysics or the GEMS program offered by the Georgetown University School of Medicine. The Georgetown PBPM certificate program is also not intended for those who want to improve their gpa by repeating basic pre-med courses that they have already completed.
International applicants please see the FAQ.
CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS
PBPM students enroll in the same science and math courses offered to our undergraduate students, ensuring that all of our students receive the same high-quality education. PBPM students attend lectures with undergraduates at classes offered during the day. Our program offers some lab sections particularly for PBPM students in order to foster a sense of community and opportunities for study together. Post-Bac students are expected to maintain a gpa of at least 3.2 during the completion of their coursework.
The requirements for the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Certificate are successful completion of 30 credits of pre-med level science and math courses. These credits must be earned from among the following four areas of medical school pre-requisite courses:
Mathematics
Calculus I & II (4 credits each)
Probability and Statistics (4 credits)
Biology
Introductory Biology I & II (4 credits each)
Chemistry
General Chemistry I & II (3 credits each)
General Chemistry lab I & II (2 credits each)
Organic Chemistry I & II (3 credits each)
Organic Chemistry lab I & II (2 credits each)
Physics
Principles of Physics I & II (4 credits each)
Students who may have already completed a pre-req course before coming to Georgetown will complete the remaining requirements and may take additional science or math electives, such as Genetics (4 credits), Biological Chemistry (4 credits), Microbiology (4 credits), to reach the 30 credit hour requirement. Credits from undergraduate institutions or other post-bac programs do not transfer to the certificate program.
PROGRAM SCHEDULE
The program is flexibly designed to meet the student’s needs and background. The time required to complete the certificate program ranges from fifteen to twenty-four months, depending on the preparation of the incoming student.
Students may elect to take one, two, or three science courses (including labs) during an academic term. Taking three science courses per semester is a heavy load, and therefore these schedules should be considered carefully by those with little or no exposure to rigorous college level science and/or math courses. In addition, students with little or no volunteer experience in a medical setting will need to allow time for that activity. Further, allowing time to prepare for the MCAT exam is an important consideration.
The following are typical schedules for a student applying for entry in each of the three terms.
SPRING ENTRY
Seats for spring term entry is extremely limited and only applicants that need to complete a math course (Calculus I or II or Statistics) and/or have completed one term of Biology, Chemistry, or Physics should apply for entry for this term. Georgetown does not offer all courses all terms. Biology I, Chemistry I, Physics I, and Organic Chemistry I are only offered in the fall term. The second session of these courses is only offered in the spring term. These courses must be taken in sequence.
and/or
Physics II
Gen Chem II + lab
and
Biology I + lab
and
second Bio + lab
All the basic pre-requisite courses are offered during the summer term and are taught by regular Georgetown faculty. The section I courses are offered during the first summer session and section II courses during the second summer session. Students may only take one course during each session. Summer term courses are offered in a very compressed time period. If you are the type of student that needs additional study time you should carefully consider whether entering this term is right for you. Please visit the School of Continuing Studies website for information about the summer schedule.
A typical completion schedule for a student entering in the summer term is:
Gen Chem II + lab
Organic Chem I + lab
optional math class if needed
Organic Chem II + lab
optional a math class if needed
Physics II + lab
A typical completion schedule for a student entering in the fall term is:
Gen Chem I + lab
optional - a math class if needed
Gen Chem II + lab
optional - a math class if needed
Organic Chem II + lab
or
Physics I + lab
Physics II + lab
or
or
Physics II + lab
Note that completion of the pre-req courses does not necessarily mean a student is ready to apply to medical school. Time for study and preparation for the MCAT exam at the end of the pre-requisite coursework and volunteer and/or research opportunities need to also be considered.
COST
We offer pre-medical core science courses at a reduced per credit tuition rate for PBPM students. These courses carry a PBPM prefix (e.g., PBPM 104). Tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year is $1,175 per credit hour (note - some courses may have additional lab fees).
Students offered admission will be required to submit a non-refundable deposit of $150 to reserve their seat. Deposits will be applied to tuition once the student matriculates.
FINANCIAL AID
Students taking courses in the Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program may qualify for federal or other financial aid. For questions about financial aid, please contact the Office of Student Financial Services.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES AND DEADLINES
Applicants for the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Med Certificate Program must have completed a four year undergraduate degree with a GPA of at least 3.2, and evidenced ability to succeed in college-level science courses. Applicants who have not completed one year of college math, consisting of either Calculus I and II, or Calculus I and a Statistics course, will be expected to complete these courses within the certificate program. Students who are currently enrolled as undergraduates may apply to the program but matriculation cannot occur without an awarded undergraduate degree.
We admit up to approximately 20-25 students for summer or fall start dates and a few students for spring semester in certain limited circumstances (i.e., students who need to take a math class or who have the first semester of a required lab course such as chemistry or biology, may request a spring semester start date).
The following materials are required for completion of the application:
• the completed application form submitted online
• official transcripts of all college work (mailed directly to Pre-Health Programs, Georgetown University, 108 White-Gravenor, Washington, DC 20057)
• a one-page essay describing your interest in pursuing a career in medicine and relevant information about your undergraduate education and work experience
• a one-page resume
• one letter of recommendation
• SAT or ACT test results may be included (but are not required)
• a $65.00 application fee
