Early Assurance Program (EAP)

The Early Assurance Program (EAP) is an opportunity for academically strong students to be assured admission to the Georgetown University School of Medicine at the end of their Sophomore year. The goal of early admission is to provide students the opportunity to focus on other academic pursuits by providing relief from the ordinary pressures of the medical school application process, including MCAT preparation and interviews during their junior and senior years. Students describe their academic interests and goals in a formal proposal, which is evaluated by the Pre-Medical Recommendation Committee and the Georgetown School of Medicine admissions committee. Selected students are interviewed by two members of the School of Medicine admissions committee. Applicants are selected on the basis of their academic credentials, seriousness and thoughtfulness of their proposal, and overall preparedness for medical study. The EAP offer of admission is not binding; students are expected to accept the offer of admission by August before their senior year. If accepted students apply to any medical schools other than Georgetown, or if they do not confirm their interest by the stated deadline, they forfeit their assurance of acceptance.

To be eligible for the EAP, students must be in their fourth semester at Georgetown University, be of sophomore status, and have completed both semesters of four of the five standard pre-med courses by the end of May (biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, calculus and/or statistics, and physics). Following is the annual calendar for the EAP.

• Sophomore students are contacted via email in January to announce the program and them of the EAP requirements. Interested students meet with Dean Tad Howard in January and February. At this meeting, the student should be prepared to discuss his/her current academic plan, ideas for his/her program proposal, and the EAP application process. Dean Howard will assign the student a Pre-medical Recommendation Committee (PMRC) member for consultation during the process. The current year’s application is available here.

• The School of Medicine will hold an orientation meeting for eligible students in February. The date, time, and location of the orientation will be communicated to students via email.

• Students should make an appointment and meet with their PMRC member as soon as possible and no later than mid-March. Students should bring with them a copy of their transcript, a draft of their essay, and a résumé and be prepared to discuss their proposal. Deliver or email a draft of your proposal in advance if possible. Remember that your PMRC member will be one of your principal advocates during the Committee deliberations.

• The final complete EAP application is due at the end of March. The final application must include a completed EAP application form, the proposal, a résumé, and four letters of recommendation from Georgetown faculty. The final proposal essay should contain a clear statement of your academic proposal, articulating what you would like to do during your Junior and Senior years if given the early assurance of admission to the Georgetown School of Medicine.

• The recommendation letter request forms should be given to your references, either in person or by mail. Besides reminding your letter writers to get their recommendation letters to the PMRC by the deadline, the request letters inform the references of your choice of confidentiality arrangements and what the committee is looking for in a letter of recommendation.

• Following the application deadline, the PMRC will meet and select students to recommend for interviews at the School of Medicine. Students will be notified by email of the PMRC decision.

• In early to mid-April, Dean Whitmer will conduct mock interviews with students selected by the PMRC.

• Selected students will be contacted by the School of Medicine’s Office of Admissions to arrange a time for an interview during the month of May. The School of Medicine will have final decisions in June and will notify applicants by mail.

• Students admitted to the EAP are relieved of the MCAT requirement. They will have certain GPA standards to maintain and are expected to complete that part of their proposal accepted by the PMRC. Students must commit to attend the Georgetown School of Medicine by August prior to their senior year or they forfeit their acceptance.
